Global Sustainable Cities Rankings: SFU Ranks High for Climate Action and Sustainability

Simon Fraser University (SFU) has made significant strides in advancing the United Nations' sustainable development goals, particularly in the areas of climate action and sustainability. According to the Times Higher Education (THE) 2023 Impact Rankings, SFU has ranked high globally and nationally in several categories, showcasing its commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable future.

In terms of overall impact, SFU ranks 14th in Canada and 86th globally among nearly 1,600 universities. The university also excels in specific areas, such as peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16), where it is tied for 15th worldwide and 4th nationally. Additionally, SFU's partnerships for the goals (SDG 17) have earned it a global ranking of 51st and a national ranking of 7th.

SFU President Joy Johnson proudly acknowledges the university's community-driven efforts to advance research, teaching, and community engagement in climate action and sustainability. 'Over the past year, I have seen students, faculty, and staff come together like never before to support our vision of building a more inclusive and sustainable future for everyone,' she says.

Nationally, SFU has ranked third for climate action (SDG 13), demonstrating its commitment to addressing this critical global issue. The university has also consistently been among the top 10 universities worldwide in the category of sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) since 2020, topping the rankings in 2020.

The annual Impact Rankings measure universities' strengths in advancing the United Nations' sustainable development goals (SDGs), which call on developed and developing countries to partner on critical global issues. SFU's impressive rankings reflect its dedication to addressing pressing challenges such as climate change, poverty reduction, and social inequality.
